Liminal Mysteries

L

The Liminal Mysteries series explores life and love in Albion in the wake of the Second World War. The books form an arc about the land magic and making the world better, but can be read in any order. (They also connect to characters in other books in various ways, as parents, friends, or chosen family.)

Novellas

N

I also have a scattering of novellas that are distinct from series. In internal chronological order, they are:

  • Complementary finds Elizabeth Mason assigned to investigate some odd events at an artists colony on the Norfolk coast, aided by Rosemary Ditson.
  • Casting Nasturtiums is a friends to lovers MMF romance, launched when Seth goes looking for his best friend, Golshan, after he's finally demobbed after the Great War. (Found in the Winter's Charms collection.)
  • Ancient Trust brings Geoffrey Carillon back to Albion when his brother dies unexpectedly. Once back, he and Thomas Benton must begin to mend the land magic and build a new life. (Not a romance, free by subscribing to my newsletter.)
  • Country Manners involves Kate navigating a visit to Giles' family in the time between their engagement and their marriage, over the Christmas holiday. (Found in the Winter's Charms collection.)
  • Chasing Legends finds two couples - Thesan and Isembard, Pross and Ibis - exploring some of the mysteries of Schola's magic and confronting their own past. (Found in the Winter's Charms collection.)

Mysterious Powers

M

Mysterious Powers is a series about the magical community of the British Isles in the 1920s, living in a world changed by the Great War and its aftermath. Each book explores a different piece of the world, in the company of a different couple, exploring questions of power and what it means to have it or not have it.

  • Arthur has duties to attend to, and Melusina has a particular goal: fixing an issue with the Viceroy’s safe in Calcutta, India in 1882. Forged in Combat is a prequel novella featuring the parents of Roland from Carry On.
  • Elen and Roland in Carry On must figure out why Roland has been isolated from everyone he knows. And what is going on with his Healer. Set in spring 1915 at the Temple of Healing.
  • A portal in the remote Scottish Highlands fails in the spring of 1922. Rathna (a fully qualified Portal Keeper) and Gabe (who recently finished his apprenticeship) are assigned to figure out the problem in The Fossil Door. Besides the challenges of a rocky landscape and a threatening mythical monster, they both carry secrets they’ve never admitted to others.
  • Thesan and Isembard expect the 1924-25 school year at Schola to be full of much the same as last year. That means teaching, other duties, and a pleasant time marking assignments with each other down at the pub on Saturday nights. Instead, the year offers students up to something mysterious, academic politics, and a whirl of dizzying social events. Eclipse is a friends-to-lovers romance full of the change of perspective an eclipse can bring.
  • Robin is rebuilding his life after a series of disastrous decisions and their consequences. Beatrice has lived with an inherited curse. When Robin overhears a conversation that must be about art forgery, he is too curious for his own good. Fool’s Gold has art, a custos dragon, and many mysteries in the deep vaults. Set in early 1926 in Trellech.
  • Mabyn and Cyrus have been colleagues on the Council for many years. They must work together to find a lost heir and repair damaged land magics in The Hare and the Oak. It forces them to confront their own personal history, oaths kept and broken, and what it means to move forward. This late-in-life romance takes place in the spring and summer of 1926 in Suffolk.
  • In Point By Point, Lydia wants to make her name and reputation in immersive journalism. When she asks Galen for help, they both get more than they bargained for. A rolling plot that runs from horse racing to house parties to dangerous ritual magics in 1926.
  • Mistress of Birds finds Thalia volunteered to keep an eye on her great-aunt’s remote house on the edge of Dartmoor in 1927, and perhaps she can find something to write about there. The oddities start to pile up, however, and Adam, down in the orchard, seems to be the only one who notices.

Mysterious Charm

M

Mysterious Charm is a series about the magical community of the British Isles in the 1920s. Everyone is living in a world changed by the Great War and its aftermath. Each book explores a different piece of the world, in the company of a different couple, but the series is linked through connections to one Lord Geoffrey Carillon.

You can read them in any order, but the publication order might be most satisfying. I do recommend reading Goblin Fruit before On The Bias though!

If you’re looking for particular kinds of stories (or perhaps want to avoid certain topics), check out my content notes page for additional details. My authorial wiki has a list of all the books that relate to Carillon directly.

The books of Mysterious Charm

  • Rufus and Ferry in Outcrossing deal with the challenges of smugglers and entirely inadequate magical educations.
  • Lord Carillon and Lizzie investigate a dangerous magical drink together in Goblin Fruit.
  • Ibis and Pross stumble into a much larger problem when they begin to research a lost Magician’s Hoard.
  • Wards of the Roses finds a young Guardswoman, Kate, assisting Giles, a mathematician blinded in the Great War. Together, they explore the mystery of a manor house that reappeared after several hundred years.
  • Laura was hoping for a pleasant weekend visiting Galen’s family during In The Cards. The unexpected murder exposes deep chasms in the family.
  • Benton, valet to Lord Geoffrey Carillon, takes his duties most seriously. Even when they lead to him conspiring with Cassie, his lordship’s preferrered dressmaker, in On The Bias.
  • When Vivian goes to investigate mysterious events at a family home turned boarding house in Oxfordshire in Seven Sisters, Cadmus must confront his past history and current assumptions if they are to save the house.

Land Mysteries

L

The Land Mysteries series explores Albion as we move into the Second World War. They’re about the land magic, about chosen family, and the many kinds of relationships we have in our lives – though there’s plenty of romance in the mix too!

(In this series, however, not every book is focused on a romance.)

The books of the Land Mysteries series

You can read the books in any order, but there is an overall arc reflecting changes in approaches to the land magic and the ties and associations between a number of characters.

  • In Best Foot Forward, Lord Geoffrey Carillon needs help to get an alchemist’s research out of Germany in 1935. Alexander Landry has the skills, but it means Carillon must trust someone on the Council. (An enemies to “it’s complicated” romance, no cheating involved.)
  • Nocturnal Quarry finds Alexander in America in 1938, bringing home just how much has changed in his life, including how he solves problems. (A character-focused novella.)
  • Old As The Hills challenges both Gabe and Rathna to bring their own particular talents to the opening year of the Second World War. (An established loving marriage negotiating new demands.)
  • Upon A Summer's Day forces Gabe to answer a question that's been looming over him since June 1940. The question is how he'll answer. (Character focused novel in the second half of 1940.)
  • In Illusion of a Boar, four magical specialists are pulled together in the spring of 1944 for an absolutely secret mission as part of preparations for D-Day. (Novel, with a romance.)
  • Three Graces finds Lizzie, Alysoun, and Thesan tackling an unanswered question: what led to Temple Carillon's death in 1922? (Character focused novella in the spring and summer of 1945.)
  • The Magic of Four is a school story told through four students at Schola in the 1946-1947 school year. Besides the usual challenges of school - classes, sports, other students - it's the year the secret societies at Schola choose new members. (School story - no romances - of second year students)

They connect to characters who appear in the 1920s books, but can be read in any order. My authorial wiki can help if you want to make more connections between characters, places, and events.

  • Pastiche is the story of an arranged marriage turned love match, full of chivalry, honour, art forgery, and the occasional duel. It’s set in 1906.
  • Sailor’s Jewel follows the passage of a magical gem across the Atlantic ocean in 1901, calling on the need for skill, magical ritual, and a few urgent offerings.
  • Four Walls and a Heart is a novella romance in 1884. When Gil returns from fighting in the Sudan with a life-changing injury, Magni visits. They solve a small mystery and realise some things about themselves and each other.
